Leadership is one of the most written about yet remains one of the least understood topics on the planet.

Nobody can figure it out. I know by writing this I’m not helping the statistic, but here’s my simple take on that will continue to be on theme throughout this newsletter.

Leadership is about showing up.

When The World Needs You The Most

Leadership isn’t like how we see it in the movies. Someone who steps up when the world needs them the most.

Some big moment of conflict, confusion, or despair… and just as people are about to lose hope - a leader steps up. A guiding light, and saviour, who inspires with their words and their actions, and propels people achieve feats they could only dream of.

While that may very occasionally be the case. Most of the time it is a lot less glamorous, and is a lot less obvious.

Here’s the thing.

All You Can Do Is Show Up

We’d like to believe that we can make a difference in an instant. Truth is…

You don’t get to choose when change someone’s life

If you even ever do.

You can’t choose when you make an impact

You can’t wait for the right time before swooping in to make a difference

Because at the end of the day, how others respond to our actions isn’t up to us. The very best we can ever do as leaders is try our best.

The best we can do is show up.

Every day.

Be a source of support.
Be a source of care and understanding.
Be in their corner, be in their camp.
Be a rock for values and compassion.
Every. Single. Day.

Show up when it seems like it doesn’t matter.

Show up when it’s inconsequential.

Keep showing up.

Most days it won’t feel like you’re doing much.

But keep showing up, and one day you will find people referring to you as a leader.

When that day comes, you might not feel like you’re a leader at all.

But just someone who kept turning up.

You’ll find that for most of us, that will be what a leader is.
